Sixth Grade Students Learn From Veterans Over Breakfast
Sixth Grade Students Learn From Veterans Over Breakfast

On three separate occasions throughout this school year, sixth grade students at Dutch Ridge Elementary School have the opportunity to sit down for a filling breakfast and interact with veterans from all branches of the military. During the Veterans Breakfast Club held locally and orchestrated by a non-profit organization of the same name, our sixth graders are able to question, discuss, and learn about United States history from these men and women who have had a hand in shaping it. While our students were given a couple of guided questions to assist in their conversations, they were also tasked socially with maintaining informative and respectful interactions.

At the conclusion of the first event, the veterans in attendance were very complimentary of our sixth grade learners, specifically citing their level of respect and intelligence in their questioning. Also acknowledged during the breakfast on several occasions were Mrs. Learn and the sixth grade team of teachers for organizing this learning experience for the students as well as the Beaver Area School District for their willingness to educate our students about the history of the United States of America.

While Mrs. Learn’s and Mrs. Lang’s homerooms attended the first breakfast, the remainder of the sixth grade homerooms will also have the opportunity to interact with our military veterans during two more events to occur later on this year.

As part of their mission statement, the Veterans Breakfast Club states, “We believe that through our work, people will be educated, healed, and inspired.” Through this event, our students are definitely receiving an educational experience they will remember for a lifetime to come.
